Questions & AnswersWhat must a student do to earn an IB diploma? Students must take six IB courses - three HL (higher level) and three SL (standard level). HL courses are five trimesters in length while SL courses are either three or four trimesters depending on the course. Students must also take the "Theory of Knowledge" course, complete 150 hours in the Creativity, Action and Service component and complete a 4,000 word research essay. On the successful completion of all exams and requirements a student will be awarded an IB diploma. Are there other IB options available to my student? A student may choose to sit for a certificate in any specific IB course. If the student successfully passes the exams and requirements for the course, the transcript will indicate the IB designation for that course only. What else should I know? The IB diploma curriculum is an extremely rigorous course of study, and students must be self-motivated and disciplined in their approach. IB assessments are both externally administered as well as internally moderated. Final exams and certain projects are sent to IB examiners in different parts of the world. Assessments are scored on international standards which are quite high. Whether or not a student earns the diploma, he or she can be proud of completing the coursework and understanding a different approach to learning. |
