Michener Elementary is a member in good standing of the Nation Network of Partnership Schools at Johns Hopkins University. As a designated Family Friendly School, we have developed a Parent Involvement Policy that includes:

• Parenting

• Learning At Home
• Decision Making
• Collaborating with the Community

Our Reach Out And Read program features 80 minutes of uninterrupted literacy instruction at the student's reading level. Utilizing a balanced literacy approach, all students in Grades 1 through 4 are assess in reading during the first two weeks of school. Students are then grouped within their village for maximum instructional time. Literacy Support and Reading Recovery services are available for those students who are experiencing difficulty. Students are assessed every 8 weeks and regrouped according to progress.

Michener Elementary with an enrollment of nearly 375 students is divided into 3 smaller units called villages. A great deal of research suggests that smaller schools contribute to student's achievement, attainment and a sense of well-being. A growing body of literature suggests that downsizing can have a positive effect on attendance, behavior, satisfaction with school, greater self-esteem..and a feeling of community.
