"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."  - Albert Einstein

Dear Adrian Community,

Every year presents itself with new challenges and, more importantly, new opportunities. Adrian Public Schools is not immune to the economic troubles that surround the State of Michigan and the nation. These challenging economic times force us to reflect on our mission at APS.The mission of Adrian Public Schools is to provide, in partnership with parents and our community, quality educational opportunities that challenge students to excel academically and socially to become contributing citizens.

Our students, your children, should not be hindered by the economic troubles of the adult world. It is our responsibility to provide APS students with quality educational opportunities that challenge our students. Our mission statement doesn’t have an asterisk clarifying that we provide quality educational opportunities that challenge students as long as money is available. Instead, this is a commitment that we must fulfill, as the adults.

Success at achieving the APS mission provides all of us with security from repeating today’s economic climate in the foreseeable future. Today’s students show promise of becoming the next “great generation” and we have the opportunity to provide them with the tools to do great things into adulthood.

The federal government recently approved ARRA funds (stimulus dollars) targeted at specific programming to help improve education. These dollars are not intended to simply replicate our current efforts. Instead, they are intended to help “reinvent” education. Fortunately, APS has a Board of Education committed to the district’s mission. The leadership team at APS combined with a dedicated Board of Education is committed to utilizing these dollars for their intended purpose while upholding our mission.

Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” The economic difficulty that we are experiencing as a state and nation has forced us to reflect on our current practices and on our beliefs. The reflection is creating tremendous opportunities for our students. Examples like the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Adrian High School, the infusion of technology throughout the district, the intervention programs K-12, and the daily glimmers of “greatness” that we see in our students as early as Kindergarten demonstrate the opportunities Einstein referred to in his statement.

Simply take a moment to watch our elementary students help each other by reaching out with a caring hand, or our middle school students providing meals to families over Thanksgiving, or our high school students helping throughout the community and it is clear that our students are dedicated to improving our world. APS will continue to search for opportunities in these difficult times in order for our students to improve this world for their children and grandchildren while working to fulfill our mission.

Take Care,

Christopher Timmis, Ed.D.
